Our villages

Matterdale Parish covers some 17,500 acres with a resident population of only around 500, yet hosts as many as 7,000 visitors at peak times who stay at the many camping and caravan sites, B&Bs, self-catering units and hotels. As well as playing host to tourists, the valley also supports several small businesses.

The parish includes the villages and hamlets of Watermillock, Matterdale, Matterdale End, Dockray, Sparket, Thackthwaite and Bennethead.

On the other side of Ullswater, Martindale Parish includes Howtown, Martindale and Sandwick.
