I was interested to see that our ISP Zen are trialling FTTH in some areas: http://www.zen.co.uk//latest-news.aspx?page=11148 - expensive but interesting.

I suppose for those who don’t yet get 2Mbs it’s a step forward - we have some in Burton who don’t yet get 2Mbs - but I agree it’s a very low target to be aiming for!!!

” speeds of up to at least two megabytes ”
Sigh.

Double sigh!

i remember the dark days, where i lived we were on dial up, dire days- the says when 512 seemed like luxury. We campaigned to BT, requested a meeting, but they explained Cumbria wasn’t economically viable - or words to that effect. They gave us a ridiculously high trigger level, before they would consider upgrading our exchange. We thought all…[Read more]

The whole BDUK initiative has two strands - a) get everyone up to at least 2 Mbits/s and b) get as much ”superfast” coverage as possible, ideally by bringing superfast to the <2M places. So if you currently get 16M you have to hope you fall into strand b)

It will Phil, but many of the exchange users are beyond that, and some even within the 3km limit are not going to benefit as much as may be imagined dues to poor copper line quality. The plan is to map what people currently get and what the suggested improvements will be and see where [...]

BBC full story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14291335 The BBC story says that Communications Consumer Panel has said that Ofcom, the telephony regulator, should force operators to extend services to rural areas as so doing will allow those in areas currently with poor coverage to be able to receive 4G coverage, essential for modern…[Read more]

Great, thanks for the guesstimator, Phil. I’d found (and have been battling with for the last 1/2 hour+ and now given up in disgust!) the speedtester.bt.com - which simply will not work for me at all. I may not have java installed though as it’s not something I use, and the tester page came up blank so no indicator that I even needed it - so…[Read more]

The Broadband Cumbria - Burton project is trying to establish where the hotspots and, more importantly, where the notspots - those places which do not get decent broadband speeds - are, and want your help to map them. Here in Burton some of us get good broadband speeds whilst others struggle to reach 1Mbsp or 2Mbps [...]

http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl <- Guesstimator
Also speedtester.bt.com is useful to see what the link speed to the exchange and the IP profile is, if you want to do some diagnostics of why a simple speedtest is slow. It can be temperamental and needs java to run.

You get a warning across the top if java isn’t installed. The servers have a high load at times so maybe try speedtester.bt.com early in the morning, it isn’t very reliable and several tries may be required.

I wanted to comment on the blog post but couldn’t find a way to do so, to say that the map shows the centre of Burton-in-Kendal as less than 2Mbps which is incorrect as much of the centre of the village gets up to 5Mbps but the outlying areas of the village struggle to reach 2Mbsp and those areas of the exchange further out still suffer very poor…[Read more]

Burton-in-Kendal is among the next to be included in the latest roll-out plans for BT’s next generation copper broadband service. The BT investment makes available broadband speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the maximum speeds previously available to the majority of UK homes and businesses.

Stuart, I had similar message and used the Feedback tab on the left of the screen to alert admins. As Chris says, it’s hard to block these bots out totally - if you get another then just flag it up to be dealt with. You can send a private message to admins via the Feedback link.

Not a broadband issue but definitely a community hub issue: Burton Memorial Hall in Burton-in-Kendal, south Cumbria, is 1 of the final 6 projects in the 2011 Jubilee People’s Millions contest in the Border TV region. Anne Nichols wrote a new blog post: Tim Farron says current broadband plans are seriously unambitious 1 year, 5 months ago
Speaking in a Commons debate, South Lakes MP Tim Farron praised Broadband campaigners in the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency, and said that Government plans to get 2 Mb/s broadband to everyone across the country by 2015 are seriously unambitious. Tim was one of the proposers of the parliamentary motion that led to the debate. The motion [...]
