Thanks Kate. The launch went great, with representatives from all over the country. There are lots of blog links on the b4rn website and videos of support from Neelie Kroes, Andrew Stott, Trefor Davies, Kansas Google gigabit city, and lots more. Also letters, emails and tweets supporting the project. Thanks to all who made it happen. GameOn.

Great stuff, well done. I know last year we wanted a map with all of this on but nobody has managed to do it yet, so well done for cracking it. Is there a way you could overlay it over the BDUK data on a previous post on this blog? Then we can see if the worst areas have champions? Possibly they have such limited access they may not even know of…[Read more]

We need to recover fixed costs, if we do this by averaging the total cost across all the users it will be too expensive for some (many ?) so charging according to use is one option.

what do you mean by ”wholesale” ? It’s a Geo fibre project with a home run back to London. Maybe they’re just paying commercial rates.

Our willywaving gigabit will have a gigabit of internet transit. actually. I doubt I would change from adsl2+ in an urban area if my connection was good, to cable. I would probably not want to mess about changing for so small an increase in ‘speed’ which is probably capped, throttled and over contended. But I [...]

Gigabit fibre isn’t overkill. its no more expensive really than 100megabit fibre… for a bit more you could have 10gigabit. It is the artificial obsolete business model that makes internet access expensive. Yes it would be allowed to run within city limits if enough wanted it, because it won’t be funded, it can go wherever [...]

If there was a rural network near carlisle and it offered 1gigabit symmetrical no limit (obviously within reason) data transfer what would you be willing to pay to join it? It would be a community run project, so everything you paid would stay local. All your comms could come through it, phones, films, data, tv [...]

@AndyC is there a demand for faster broadband in Carlisle? Maybe if you got a gang of folk together Smallworld would extend their network? Its always going to be a numbers game.

just in case anyone was confused by my comment, I mean the map @digitaldales put on her blog post http://5tth.blogspot.com/2011/07/cumbria-broadband-slowspots.html not the ofcom one, which is pretty damn poor IMHO.

Wow, you must have read everyone’s minds! great to see a map of all the slowspots, but why have BDUK ignored all the notspots? We are going to have to get them all on. Otherwise its another project access. Well done, great idea.
