If you are interested in online mapping, ESRI provide the following services for free (signup required): http://explorer.arcgis.com/, http://www.arcgis.com/home/. You can see a bit of what it can do by going here: http://blogs.esri.com/Support/blogs/arcgisonline/archive/2011/07/20/arcgis-online-at-the-uc-2011-plenary-part-2.aspx

Hi guys
I have only recently been able to get another look at the discussions on here. I created the maps found in the group which are the subject of much blasting. The sources are described in the titles, but I’ll reiterate here to clear things up a little.
All the data I used to create the maps were supplied by Louis Moseley in a…[Read more]

I would expect BT’s checker to be optimistic also. I guess the problem with ISP’s own speed checks is that it is also based on theoretical speeds (distance to the exchange/cabinet). The maps I have created are probably similar in concept to their method and so may produce unrealistic results. The only way to get [...]

I understand the accuracy issues with the maps, they are optimistic and based on (modified) straight-line distances to the nearest cabinet. It doesn’t take into account local circumstances like that of Walney Island, or what BT has or hasn’t said about where it will upgrade the line.
This is exactly the problem that can be solved with…[Read more]

In an effort to collaborate the mapping at the parish level (champions) or for individuals wanting to share any information, I’ve created a Google Docs spreadsheet which you can populate using this form: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?authkey=CKv5-4kE&hl=en&formkey=dHo4NWxFakUtZ3RjUFZnSGpNTWE0QlE6MQ#gid=0 When you’ve created your map,…[Read more]

Barry, you linked to a document with parish residents and property numbers. Do you have one for the whole of cumbria? Or know the source?

No problem. Yes they’ll be the green cabinets (also called PCP’s).
Keep in mind you are not looking for aubergines and pottery….

BT Exchange and Cabinet Locations in Cumbria
http://www.google.com/fusiontables/DataSource?snapid=124116
These locations are based on postcodes (postcode info found on the OSOpendata website), so you’ll see plenty of errors. Use the map to get a rough idea of where the cabinet or exchange is, and check it out. If you see an error, let me know…[Read more]

James, thanks for this. A grand total of two green dots in our huge parish (Matterdale). I will find out exactly where they are (not in the middle of fields!) and let you have grid references.
I guess I’m looking for some kind of green box by the roadside?

Sadly there is no facility to show a legend, but if you click on a colour, you’ll get some info on the location. The closer to an exchange or cabinet you are, the faster the speed (theoretically, though many fibre routes take an illogical route to a more distant cabinet/exchange)
You’re looking at a map for speed gains. Exchanges can’t be…[Read more]

Hi, I’ve been working with Louis Mosely and Kate Norman to get an idea about the kind of maps that would be useful for spreading information on the broadband situation. I’ve a background in GIS and mapping (and for this project, mainly Google websites) and have produced some maps which users may or may not [...]

is there a colour code for speed ? does it account for faster services available in some exchanges ?

also there’s an exchange in Shap (I haven’t checked it in detail, just noticed the big gap around Shap)
