In October 2011 the spending review talked about since the election has now been delivered setting out how savings will be made in order to reduce the deficit left by the previous Government. One interesting point is the spending proposed for broadband. £530m has been set aside from both the BBC and digital switch-over under-spend. This is to […] View

  • Thank you Nancy… I’ll put some thought into it.

  • Dear Phil, Does this help? Means nothing to me. BT Home Hub is what I use. ADSL line status Connection information Line state Connected Connection time 0 days, 0:02:32 Downstream 416 Kbps Upstream 416 Kbps ADSL settings VPI/VCI 0/38 Type PPPoA Modulation ITU-T G.992.1 Latency type Interleaved Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.8 dB / 7.0 dB [...]

    • Thanks for that. The 63.5 dB attenuation is the signal loss from the exchange, that’s quite a high value and is often the limit on what routers report. At much above 80 dB ADSL doesn’t work.

Home Hub’s aren’t fantastic at long lines, the 2Wire router used by BT Business Broadband or a Netgear 834 v3 may do quite a bit better.

      The main thing…[Read more]

    ADSL line status, Connection information
    Line state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 8:13:12
    Downstream 448 Kbps
    Upstream 416 Kbps
Looks better than I thought. All other tests I have done are much less than this.

I still think we are ’short’ of fast never mind super fast. I am not in the middle of now where at CA7 1BY

    • 350 kbits/s sounds a bit low based on postcodes and numbers at http://www.allhallowspccumbria.co.uk/page7.html

Can you see the upstream / downstream sync speed and attenuation data from your router interface, or run speedtester.bt.com and post the results here (patience and perseverance may be required). http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php may help.

        • The number checker suggests that CA7 1BY Telephone: 016973 710 61 should do a lot better than the above. 448k downstream is fairly poor by any standards, but at least it’s 10 x dialup.

Can you get the downstream attenuation figure from the router, then I would know if 448 was a reasonable achievement or not. If you got 576 instead then the IP…[Read more]
