Having read this I wonder if something apart from talk will happen in our area. http://www.guardian.co.uk/local-government-network/2012/jan/19/jeremy-hunt-broadband-cash-councils?CMP=twt_fd View

    • Hi William - Which area are you in. I think that this new report is just a story to push through any councils dragging their heels or not moving forwards as quickly as central government want to meet the targets that they are trying to reach. i think it is right that the County Council work at a pace that is manageable with the limited resources.…[Read more]

    • Are you ARE the Broadband Champion & Hub Coordinator for you area … then maybe the County Council are guilty as charged. If you don’t have the information and a clear line of communication who does? I said the other day that I felt there were a lot of headless chickens running around and that the momentum that had been generated in many areas…[Read more]

  • Ian Dixon & myself went to the meeting on Monday 23rd of the Carlisle Parish Councils Association Broadband Champions. Thought it was very interesting & well run, plus a good range of speakers. It seems there are deadlines for things to happen, although it would be good if the deadlines could be beaten. I was [...]

Don’t know about the rest of the county, but the Carlisle Parish Councils Assoiciation ran a survey, asking people for their speeds all using the same checker. I haven’t the data myself just a map, but I might know a man who knows where the data is kept.

I’ve seen a speed checkers site that gives broadband speeds that people have submitted.
I’ll have to dig for it, but I could find it if anyone is interested. I know it gave some speeds in my area.

In reply to - chris conder posted an update in the group Mapping: I think its a joke too, but unless we get everyone to prove its wrong the policy makers will fall for it. If we are to have a map it has to be correct. Thanks William. · View

I suspect it is a joke.
Someone just drew circles from cabinets & exchanges.
In Longtown is says 20mbps at the Community centre in the middle of Longtown the speed is less than 2mbps

    • Longtown has its own exchange and only has up to 8M ADSL max available, so the 20M is wrong.

Town centre properties should all connect with a modem sync of 7616 or 8128 so if the community centre is on 2M maybe they need to look at the package or fix the thing that’s broke. It would be a joke to say that only 2M is available in Longtown.

  • Looking at getting High Speed Internet access in our parish. Would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in this, also would like to work with neighbouring parishes if possible

Thank you Chris. I’m at the other end of the county on the border with Scotland. I’m working with my neighbour to try & improve the broadband. Some parts of our parish have almost no broadband. Would certainly be interested in looking at your networks if we can arrange something.

    Thanks for your reply Phil.
There is a firm offering wireless broadband from an aerial, they reckon to cover an area radius 20 kms. But they need minium of c50 subscribers before they would consider puttting up an aerial. Price a bit higher than wired broadband, but possibly room for negotiation on price. Range of speeds offered 2, 4 & 8mbps this…[Read more]

  • I’m investigating Wireless Broadband.
    Is it a solution ?

    • It can be, or at least part of a solution. If you have a fat connection for example in a school then you could use wireless to spread that around houses. Or you could use long range wireless(line of sight) to bring a connection into a notspot area.

      What were you considering ?

    • We run two wireless networks, one is a community research network for lancaster university special projects unit and one is a commercial network for an area with no adsl or mobile coverage, and even satellites aren’t much good in parts of it due to south facing hills.

    • Hi William,

Worth you having a look at Great Asby Broadband in Cumbria and also the NextGenUs Newton & Stape project in North Yorkshire - both use high speed wireless to provide broadband service.

    • Hi William, we use fixed wireless and it works really well. It took us about 4-5 years to truly understand how to make it scale and perform and we threw away about £60k of kit in the process (never believe the marketing blurb).

We’re sick of waiting for BDUK to say anything meaningful and the councils only seem to understand ‘expensive’ ways…[Read more]
