Cumbria County Council are Publishing the Cumbria Transport Plan. What has this to do with Broadband, you may ask? Well quite a lot, in my view. The Transport Plan has nothing innovative to say about rural living. It refers only to traditional forms of transport and not to communication. It seeks to reinforce failed policies about accessible…[Read more]

We are a small community CIC wifi network. We serve a 10km area with no ADSL, no mobile worth mentioning, and limited satellite access due to south facing hills. No 3g. We have 23 homes and businesses on our network. We have been running it ourselves for 8 years, as despite the promises of the [...]

Thanks for the encouraging posts! I agree that digital competence adds to young people’s employment potential. But as Phil said, it’s also a vital tool to enable access to information about jobs and services. We have won funding to run a pilot residential programme at Brathay Trust for around 20 young people, probably in Years [...]

How is the pilot programme coming along, Sarah? Can you give us an update?

Interesting map, Louis. Have seen older versions of this before but little has changed by the looks of it. A few points I would make would be :-
1. I take it Dark Fibre is a CLEO owned fibre? Obviously means it can be upgraded to 10Gbps easily it being DF.
2. The amount of CLEO owned fibre does appear to be lacking if the answer to 1 is yes. Lots…[Read more] -

Hi David, here’s a map of CLEO http://broadbandcumbria.com/wp-content/uploads/Cumbria%20V3.4.pdf As you’ll see, it doesn’t show exactly where fibre runs, but does show what kind of connection each school has. Thanks to Barry Forde!

This is from an academic perspective, but it’s an absolutely excellent analysis of concerns about the Internet and its positive and/or negative effects on society: http://bit.ly/dKDfCz

I have been in touch with the 3 local primary schools, they are all wireless. 1 gets their signal from Moota, 1 I think comes from Lillyhall and other I don’t know. There is a guy that lives at Eaglesfield, where 1 of the schools is located hwo works for CLEO, I will get in touch with him to see what he can tell me.

Is there any information on where fibre is layed, both in use and dark?

You can pick bits up from Geo and other network operator web sites. CLEO have 155M microwave link to Moota Hill Mast - can you see that from your area ?

LOL I’ve been trying to get that map for over a decade! At first it was commercially sensitive, and then it became a matter of national security. There are a few ’friendly’ people in the industry who will tell you detail around your postcode…..

CLEO is a mixed architecture with connections by wireless, fibre and copper.

As an aside, the local politicians don’t seem to be very active in this. Only 1 MP out of 6 being a member isn’t very good. My County Councillor isn’t a member although I am pleased to say my District councillor is.

I think it is focussed on Eden Valley area (not just Penrith) as that’s a Big Society vanguard area as well as a BDUK broadband pilot. Constituency boundaries may also play a part in it !
Penrith is on the N-S fibre corridor too.

In the ‘Latest News on Cumbria’s Broadband Pilot’ it looks like the County Coucil are interested in using CLEO. When I worked for Kangol, before they were closed down, we used CLEO for several years and it was by far a better connection than anything else we could find. At that time the connection was [...]

I am new to this so I hope I am not asking daft questions. The proposal put forward by Barry Forde is based around Penrith, is that because a county wide solution is not the way to go and that we get a better solution by splitting into smaller groups and find the best fit [...]

Phil’s right, and I also think that those online tools are symptomatic of a bigger, underlying trend: digital technologies and their related activities are actually a growth area of the economy at the moment; we are increasingly reliant on digital infrastructure, and the growth of digital data remains exponential. This means that digital literacy is [...]
